How does automated trip tracking work?
How does it work?
Within Track Assistant you have the option to either register trips manually, or do it automatically. This is the way automated trip tracking is working:
As soon as you have set up the App for automated trip tracking, it detects when you are entering your car and switching it on. Because the App recognises the Bluetooth connection of your carkit / handsfree set. At this point you will receive a notification on your smartphone that the trip has started. From this moment, we start to collect GPS coordinates systematically. These coordinates are saved within the App.
When you stop the car and switch of the power, the App waits for 6 mins to check if your really ended your trip. Because when you drive away again within 6 mins, that stop will be registered as a waypoint. You will receive notifications for waypoints as well.
When 6 mins have passed after you stopped your car, you will get the notification ‘trip ended’ and all data (coordinates) will be pushed to the Track Assistant servers. On the servers, the route will then be determined and the distance calculated. As soon as the route and distance is available, it will be send back to the App and you receive the final notification ‘trip processed’. The trip is ready to be viewed in the App by swiping the trip to the left and click on ‘view trip’.
Initial setup
Step 1: are you a new or existing user of Track Assistant?
The first automatic journey continues with the odometer value of your previous trip. If you are an existing user, you do not have to do anything at this stage and can continue with Step 2 right away. If you are a new user, you first have to manually add your last trip with the actual odometer value, so that the first automatic trip continues with the latest odometer value. You can add a trip with the latest value in the App by clicking on the + sign and add the information. This can also be done in your online account.
Step 2: connect the app with the carkit / handsfree set of your car
1. Start the Track Assistant App and click on the icon with the three dots in the upper right corner and choose ‘settings’.
2. Choose ‘automated trip tracking’ in the menu that is appearing.
3. Select the administration (the license plate) of the car for which you would like to setup automated trip tracking.
4. Check the box ‘Enable automated trip tracking’.
5. Select ‘Bluetooth connection’ and choose the Bluetooth connection of the carkit / handsfree set of your car, for which you would like to register the trips.
Step 3: setup or adjust the notifications
When automated trip tracking is enable, you will get the following notifications by default:
- Trip started – ‘license plate’
- Waypoint added – ‘license plate’
- Trip ended – ‘license plate’
- Trip processed – license plate’
Every notification is provided with a time stamp as well.
You have the option to disable one or more notifications. You can do this by going to the settings menu in the upper right corner.
Frequently asked questions
Why does it take a few minutes before the trip is processed?
While driving, the Track Assistant app registers the GPS coordinates of where you are, every few minutes. As soon as you switch off the car, Track Assistant waits for 6 mins to see if this is your end destination, or if you just stopped for a moment (i.e. to get a cup of coffee at a fuel station).
Why do I get the notification 'Trip not processed'?
It may happen that a trip cannot be processed. A poor or no internet connection can be one of the causes.
In that case you will get the notification ‘Trip not processed. You should manually fill in the details.’ A trip is added to your administration, but without addresses. You can then manually fill in the start location, destination, and if needed waypoints, to complete the trip.
